The transmission error ΔS according to Niemann/Winter Volume 2 is used for pre-dimensioning of the gearing with regard to noise excitation and is based on the simplified calculation method from the Baethge dissertation. The main influencing factor is the change to the total length of the line of contact over the mesh. System deformations and flank modifications are not considered in this method. The following figure from the Wikidal dissertation shows the fluctuation of the total length of the line of contact Δlcof a spur gear as a function of the transverse and overlap contact ratios:

Δl Difference between the maximum and minimum total length of the line of contact relative to the time-averaged value
εα Transverse contact ratio
εß Overlap contact ratio
