A protuberance on the tool can be defined to create an undercut on the gear. This undercut reduces the risk of a machining notch during finishing.
The following input options are available:
| prP0 | Protuberance amount on the rack reference profile |
| hprP0 | Protuberance height on the rack reference profile |
| hFaP0 | Utilized addendum on the rack reference profile |
| αprP0 | Protuberance angle on the rack reference profile |
| SP0 | Tooth thickness at the reference line of the rack reference profile |
| mnP0 | Normal module of the rack reference profile |
In the literature, it is often recommended to avoid undercutting, as it weakens the tooth root cross-section and reduces the tooth root load carrying capacity. In practice, protuberance tools are used to avoid machining notches in the tooth root. These notches can cause a significant increase in stress and reduce the tooth root load carrying capacity significantly. The influence of the notch can be analyzed in the Workbench using the local calculation method "Tooth root stress BEM".
